A teacher at a Cambridge high school is accused of inappropriate sexual interaction with two students at her school.

Forty-year-old Sonya Russell, who lives in Waterloo and works at Preston High School, was arrested Wednesday and charged with two counts of luring via computer and one count each of sexual exploitation and invitation to sexual touching.

Police say the incidents with two male students occurred during the past year, and the police investigation began in May.

“The charges relate to allegations of inappropriate interaction with two students who attend the school,” says police spokesperson Olaf Heinzel.

Waterloo Region District School Board officials say Russell has been assigned to home duty.

“That is a common practice we have within the board when there’s a serious allegation against an employee,” says superintendent Laura Hodgins.

Russell made a brief appearance in court Thursday, where she was released on bail.

Under the terms of her release, Russell cannot use a computer, a cellphone or social messaging.
