A preliminary hearing got underway on Tuesday in the case of Rafael Quintanilla, a bus driver charged in a roundabout crash that seriously injured a teen.

A lawyer was in court to represent the 39-year-old Hamilton man who drivers for Grand River Transit at the closed-door session with the provincial prosecutor.

Quintanilla was charged with careless driving two weeks after a crash in the roundabout at Block Line Road and Homer Watson Boulevard in Kitchener on Oct. 7, 2011.

Sixteen-year-old Cassi Lam, who was crossing the street on her way to school, was seriously injured in the collision.

The collision made headlines and was followed by protests about the safety of the roundabout by Lam's friends and fellow students.

The protests led to a reduction in the speed limit at the roundabout and the conversion of yield signs to stop signs.

Meanwhile the Lam family is preparing to sue the driver, the City of Kitchener, Region of Waterloo and Grand River Transit Authority for personal damages.

The law firm representing the family says she still suffers from cognitive impairments, facial scarring and orthopedic injuries.

They are completing their own investigation and expect to file the paperwork in the next few months.

According to the region, Quintanilla continues to work at GRT, but is no longer driving a bus.

Quintanilla's lawyer did not want to comment on the hearing. The next court date is May 25.
