The man who was shot by a Waterloo Regional Police officer outside a Cambridge townhouse has pleaded guilty to attempted murder and aggravated assault.
Court was told that Wesley Laforme had repeatedly stabbed his ex-girlfriend and also attacked Const. Elizabeth Skelding before being shot.
The altercation prompted a large-scale and lengthy police presence in the area of Morning Calm Drive on April 30.
Laforme, a 30-year-old Brantford resident, was charged with two counts of attempted murder.
He had visited Morning Calm the previous day, attempting to rekindle his relationship with his ex-girlfriend.
Court heard that he returned to the house early the following morning, and broke in.
When the woman realized what was going on, she called 911 and ran out the front door – being chased by Laforme.
All three people were taken to hospital. While the police officer was released later that day, Laforme and the other woman both required surgery and lengthy treatment.
In Laforme’s case, a bullet became lodged near his spine. He attended his most recent court appearance in a wheelchair.
A date for his sentencing hearing will be set next Tuesday. It is expected to take place sometime in October.
In an email to CTV News, his lawyer said that Laforme is “remorseful” for his actions.
“My client was cooperative with police immediately after the incident,” Mark Parrott said.
“He indicated his state of mind and his intentions of that night.”
Skelding is “in the midst of returning to work,” Chief Bryan Larkin said in an interview.
“We’re very proud of her tenacity, her perseverance,” he said.
“She put herself in harm’s way to ensure the safety of others.”
The Special Investigations Unit is continuing to look into Skelding’s conduct.
