Guelph police are asking members of the public to be more aware after a n attempted break and enter early Monday morning.

“We are asking that people ensure that their vehicles are locked and that they have removed their garage door openers,” an officer said.

Police responded to a residence in the south end of Guelph on Hickory Street after the homeowner said someone had opened the garage door.

The homeowner told police he was woken up around 4 a.m. to the sound of his garage door opening. The man told police he went to go check what was happening and that’s when he saw a man in his twenties still in the vehicle.

Police said the man made off with a handful of change from the vehicle. They said that although it wasn’t much, the situation was completely avoidable and could have turned out to be much worse.

The suspect is described as wearing a dark hoodie, dark-coloured pants and he fled the scene on a bike prior to police arrival.
