Canadian Solar says it’s still committed to Guelph, despite laying off 130 employees at its Speedvale Avenue plant.

A spokesperson for the company says the job cuts are a result of Canadian Solar seeing a drop in demand for its product.

Guelph MPP Liz Sandals echoed those comments Monday, adding that the company has had to drop its prices due to stronger competition from other firms around North America.

“I think that Canadian Solar is adjusting to a world in which they are going to be needing to compete in the whole North American market,” she said.

Following the 130 layoffs, Canadian Solar employs approximately 350 people in Guelph.

The company still plans to hire more operations and maintenance workers, while shifting more of its focus to research and development with a goal of finding new technology it can bring to the market.
