Guelph housing affordability move allows residents to build fourplexes
In an effort to improve housing affordability and supply, Guelph city council has voted in favour of allowing residents to build up to four housing units on a single property.
In a release sent out on Wednesday, the city said this type of development will provide more diverse housing options while keeping Guelph’s small town aesthetic.
“By allowing more diverse housing options like fourplexes, we can help more residents find a place to call home — from first-time homebuyers to those looking for another income stream, multi-generational families and retirees looking to age in place,” said Krista Walkey, the General Manager of Planning and Building Services, in the release.
The motion was passed on Tuesday, with city council approving adjustments to official plan and zoning bylaws to allow the change.
It comes after the federal government and the city reached an agreement in January to fast-track nearly 750 new housing units over the next three years to help meet housing demand in Guelph as part of the Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF). Part of this plan was for the city to permit multiplexes to be built higher than four storeys and also allow more than four units per residential lot.
