A 23-year-old Guelph man was arrested Thursday after trying to evade police.

Police first stopped the vehicle on Wyndham Street North in Guelph for an offence under the Highway Traffic Act.

As the officer approached the driver’s side of the vehicle, the vehicle sped off and turned onto MacDonnell Street, where police say it had to stop due to traffic congestion.

The officer then walked up to the vehicle and again tried to speak to the driver. The congestion cleared, and the vehicle once again accelerated out of the area, running over the officer’s foot and onto the sidewalk before turning onto Norfolk Street.

A chase ensued, ending with he vehicle being stopped on Woolwich Street North and the driver arrested.

The driver was charged with dangerous driving, flight from police and assaulting police. He will appear in court in January.

The officer did not require medical attention for his foot.
