Zachary Sloane, 28, of Stratford was in court Friday in connection with allegations he left two men with special needs in a van while he went drinking.

A passerby reportedly saw the two men and contacted Waterloo Regional police.

The two men in the van were located by police on Natchez Road around 8 p.m. on June 10. They were unharmed.

Waterloo Regional Police spokesperson Olaf Heinzel says "The citizen had noticed there were some individuals sitting in a van. He became concerned, checked on the occupants of the van, and was able to determine that the occupants were adults but the occupants were special needs adults and were not able to readily communicate."

The personal care worker driving the van, who was considered the caregiver for the two men at the time, was found at a strip club called Roxxanne's on Victoria Street near Natchez Road an hour later.

Heinzel says "Shortly after that a person identified himself as the individual caregiver for the two. He was at that point arrested and charged."

The name of the group home where the accused worked has not been released.

Sloane appeared in a Kitchener court Friday to face two charges of failing to provide the necessities of life.

He refused repeated requests from CTV News for comment.

He is scheduled to return to court on August 26.
