Despite delays that have pushed back the opening of a tire remanufacturing plant in St. Marys, officials with Green Arc Tire say they’re still hopeful of getting up and running before long.

The plant was first announced in November 2013.

At the time, Green Arc representatives said they expected to have it open within three months.

Instead, the company found itself needing far more time to move through the regulatory process – an important step in which was cleared this week.

The Ministry of the Environment has issued a draft environmental compliance approval permit for the facility.

“We are delighted that our operation is moving forward, allowing us to create hundreds of new jobs,” Green Arc CEO Mike DiCenzo said in a news release.

“We’ll be announcing job fairs, and making plans for hiring and production, once conditions of the draft permit are finalized, and the ministry signs off.”

A spokesperson for the ministry tells CTV News the draft permit, which addresses issues around dust, odours, tire storage and other environmental issues, is still subject to a review.

The company says it still plans to hire 340 people to work at its James Street facility.
