KITCHENER -- Firefighters battled a large fire at an industrial building in Kitchener on Saturday.

It started around 3:30 a.m. at GFL Environmental on Ardelt Place, a waste transfer and processing site.

None of the equipment was damaged, but some parts of the building are, according to GFL Environmental district manager Heather Roper.

The cause of the fire is unkown, but damage is estimated at $1.5 million.

Roper says no injuries have been reported.

Crews cleared the scene around 1 a.m. on Sunday, after fighting the fire for 22 hours.

An estimated 1.5 million litres of water was used to control the fire.

The Ministry of Environment and environment enforcement services with the Region of Waterloo were also on scene, ensuring run-off water did not contaminate nearby areas.

There is no concern for air pollution, according to the Ministry of Environment.
