An early morning fire in Guelph has claimed the life of a 91-year-old man.

Guelph fire responded after a report of a house fire at 17 Clive Avenue. Upon arrival they could see heavy smoke and fire from inside the home.

The blaze was located in the basement and was quickly extinguished.

The elderly man’s body was found nearby.

Neighbour Bob Pole says, “We had no idea or no indication of what was happening.”

Fire and police have not yet identified the man but neighbours say his name was Walter Duda.

Neighbours also tell CTV News, the man moved to Canada from Poland over four decades ago and had just returned from a recent trip there.

His wife died several years ago and has lived alone ever since.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office and police are still investigating the exact cause but police say damage is estimated around $350, 000.
