Residents of a quiet street in New Hamburg are being credited with alerting one of their neighbours to a fire in his house.
The fire was reported shortly before 3 p.m. Friday, at a home on Church Street.
The only person inside the home at the time was the owner, who was asleep on a couch.
Neighbours noticed the fire and began pounding on the door, waking the man – who was able to get outside without suffering any injuries.
Responding firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire, which began at the back of the home.
One of the man’s cats was found inside the building and resuscitated by firefighters.
The other cat was unaccounted for.
