Plans to build a three-lane roundabout at Waterloo Region’s most dangerous intersection are one step closer to reality.
Regional councillors voted Wednesday night to expropriate the final piece of land needed for a roundabout at Ottawa Street and Homer Watson Boulevard in Kitchener.
“There really wasn’t a lot of land to assemble,” Coun. Tom Galloway said.
The intersection, which annually tops the list of the region’s most unexpectedly crash-prone, will see construction in 2016.
A two-lane roundabout is also planned for the nearby intersection of Ottawa and Alpine Road.
“The big advantage to the Alpine roundabout is that there will be a direct access … onto the expressway, which currently doesn’t exist,” Galloway said.
Transportation officials believe the roundabout will reduce the frequency of severe T-bone crashes at the busy intersection.
