If there's one surprise to be found in the results of Waterloo Region's school board elections, it's how few surprises there were -- at least on the public side -- as voters seemed willing to stick with incumbent school board trustees.

Among the most notable exceptions were Elliot Fung, who was appointed to the Waterloo Region District School Board in 2012.

On the ballot in Waterloo, Fung garnered only 3,989 votes – good for sixth place out of seven candidates.

He fared much better in Wilmot, leading all WRDSB aspirants with 3,150 votes -- but it still wasn't enough to lead him to retain his seat.

Replacing him on the board will be Carol Millar, who came second in the area with 8,115 votes, while John Hendry and Kathleen Woodcock retained their seats.

In Kitchener, newcomer Natalie Waddell joins incumbents Ted Martin, Kathi Smith and Mike Ramsay on the board.

All incumbent trustees were re-elected in Cambridge and North Dumfries, and Scott McMillan downed David Paisley to become the trustee for Woolwich and Wellesley.

At the Waterloo Catholic District School Board, Greg Reitzel and Joyce Anderson were re-elected in Kitchener-Wilmot, to be joined by Brian Schmalz and Amy Fee.

Anthony Piscitelli finished fifth and will no longer serve on the board.

Also losing his spot with the WCDSB was Janek Jagiellowicz, who finished fourth out of four candidates in Waterloo, Wellesley and Woolwich.

The top vote-getter there was newcomer Melanie Van Alphen, with incumbent Frank Johnson also re-elected.

In Cambridge and North Dumfries, the three WCDSB slots were awarded to  incumbents Wendy Price and Manuel da Silva, as well as challenger Bill Conway.

Peter Reitmeier, an incumbent, finished out of the running.
