Provincial police say a man was killed when his pickup truck hit a tree Tuesday morning in Perth County.

Perth County OPP were dispatched to the collision on Perth Road 121, between Line 61 and Line 67 south of Millbank, shortly before 6:15 a.m. Tuesday.

According to police, the truck was travelling southbound on Perth Road 121 when it crossed over the road and into the east ditch, hitting a tree.

"It appears to have slid sideways as it approached the tree, and struck the tree basically right into the driver's side of the vehicle," says Const. Kees Wijands.

The male driver, the lone person in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

He has been identified as 32-year-old Jonathon Lucas of West Perth.

OPP estimate that the crash occurred around 6 a.m., but aren’t yet certain of that.

Perth Road 121 runs through the Nith River Valley in the area, creating a landscape that means the car could have spent some time at the side of the road without being seen by passing motorists.

“Because of the lay of the land, there’s quite an incline that the vehicle went down,” says Wijands.

“It ended up slightly out of view from people on the roadway.”

Perth Road 121 reopened shortly before 3 p.m.
