Hundreds of families in the region spent their afternoon learning the basics of cycling at "Travelwise" in Waterloo. Participants were given tips on keeping their bikes and safety skills tuned up.

The event also encouraged people to save money at the pumps this summer by leaving their cars at home and using their bikes. That's exactly what bike enthusiast Dave McCormack does when temperatures rise.

"My wife and I basically park our vehicle in the summer," says McCormack. "It doesn't move."

According to the region, about 9 percent of people walk or cycle to work on an average day. John Hill, the region's transportation demand manager, says he'd like to see that number go up.

"We're trying to get that higher to 12 or 15 percent," said Hill.

From June 5th to the 11th, the region will be challenging motorists to use alternative means of transport. Those interested in participating can visit:
