Guelph police say a man has been arrested and two loaded guns and drugs were seized after a vehicle was pulled over for failing to stop at a red light at Waterloo Avenue and Wellington Street.

Guelph Police Staff Sgt. Pat Milligan says "I think just with the crackdown that's gone in Toronto, the Greater Toronto Area, with the focus being on guns and gangs, that it's moving some of these dealers and that outside of the city to surrounding areas and Guelph is not immune to that."

According to police, the driver, 26-year-old Jesse Nartey of Kitchener, was interviewed following the traffic stop, which occurred around 12:20 a.m. on Tuesday morning.

Officers then detected the odour of marijuana, and placed Nartey under arrest. He was then found to be carrying $1,095 in cash.

A search of the 2001 Mazda 6 revealed 188 grams of marijuana (valued at $1,900) and two loaded handguns.

Guelph Police Sgt. Doug Pflug says "As a result of the investigation, they searched the vehicle and found a quantity of marijuana in the glove box. Behind that plastic bag of marijuana they found two loaded handguns."

The guns included a 9mm Semi-Automatic Handgun and a 38 caliber Colt Revolver. The latter was found to be registered as stolen on the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC).

When the suspect was searched again at the Guelph police station, an additional 37 grams of crack cocaine, valued at $3,700 was found.

Pflug adds, "And this person we have found that he is the subject of several weapons prohibitions and at the end of this investigation it's my understanding 21 charges have been laid against him."

Nartey faces charges including: failing to stop for a red light, possession or marijuana and cocaine for the purpose trafficking, two counts of possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose, two counts of carrying a concealed weapon, two counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm, two counts of possession of a firearm in a vehicle, two counts of possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition, contravention of firearm storage regulation, four counts of possession of a firearm contrary to order and possession of a weapon obtained by crime.

He made is first court appearance Tuesday.
