Kevin Speight, a Toronto doctor who also worked in Cambridge, made a court appearance Friday afternoon in connection with child pornography charges.
The 39-year-old was arrested at his home in Toronto on Thursday, but was released on bail following the court appearance.
His parents reportedly posted $20,000 bail for his release, though he remains under strict conditions.
He has been charged with possessing, accessing and making child pornography.
Toronto Police Det. Const. Amy Davey says "We don't believe the victims that we have located inside the videos are known to Speight."
Investigators say child pornography was found on computer equipment seized from Speight's downtown Toronto condo, but they have not disclosed what tipped them off.
The family doctor had been working one day a week at the Franklin Medical Centre in Cambridge for the last three months. He also worked at the Trillium Health Centre in Mississauga.
The Cambridge clinic says the doctor was vetted the same way as other employees, and there was nothing suspicious in his file.
And while officers are reassuring his colleagues none of the charges relate to Speight's medical practice or patients, they are still shocked.
Dr. Deepa Takhar at the Franklin Medical Clinic says he was suspended immediately from the practice, "He will not be returning to our practice here. We've removed him from our practice."
Reaction was similar at the Mississauga hospital where Speight worked as an emergency room doctor.
Dr. Norman Hill of the Trillium Health Centre says "We felt that the charges were of a serious nature and that to protect our patients we needed to suspend the doctor's privileges at that time."
Speight's patients in Cambridge have been assigned to two of the four remaining doctors at the clinic.
Takhar says "If that means working days, nights, Christmas, it doesn't matter. None of his patients should have any consequence of this."
