The Crown prosecutor completed his closing statements on Friday and the judge began her instructions to the jury in the trial of three men accused of first degree murder.
Ron Cyr, Nashat Qahwash and Zdenek ‘Dennis' Zvolensky have each pleaded not guilty in connection with the February 2009 shooting death of Cyr's wife Nadia Gehl.
Starting Wednesday, the lawyers for each defendant presented their summations and on Friday the Crown prosecutor completed his statement.
Then on Friday afternoon the judge began instructing the jury. She will explain the law and review the evidence presented.
Following those instructions, which are expected to continue into Saturday, the jury will be sequestered to begin deliberations in the case.
On Thursday, Devin Bains, the lawyer for Ron Cyr told the jury they should be suspicious of the evidence against his client.
Bains says police were convinced of Cyr's guilty despite evidence to the contrary, and that Cyr's claims of blackmail were true.
He also emphasized that the evidence only linked Zvolensky and Qahwash to the gun used in the shooting.
However, the Crown says the police got it exactly right and that Cyr had very big motives for wanting his wife dead, including his mistress and an insurance policy.
On Friday prosecutor Fraser Kelly maintained that Cyr planned the murder and the Qahwash and Zvolensky were enlisted to carry it out.
He told the jurors the murder was a planned and deliberate crime and that all three men acted together and should be found guilty of first degree murder.
Throughout the trial the accused have maintained they were unwitting dupes and had nothing to do with the shooting, each pointing the finger at the others.
