Police are setting up a command post at a Kitchener apartment building where one person was found dead at the scene of a fire.

The fire and death at 123 Westwood Drive are being treated as suspicious, Waterloo Regional Police said Friday.

Homicide detectives are among those now looking into the incident.

Firefighters were called to the three-storey building shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday.

Smoke was visible in a ground floor corridor.

Inside the apartment where the smoke was coming from, one man was found dead.

Police say the man’s body had signs of trauma.

A post-mortem examination is expected to take place Friday on the remains of the man, whose name has not been released by police.

The Office of the Fire Marshal is also investigating the fire.

Neighbours said that a man lived alone inside the apartment where the fire began, although it was not clear if that man was the person found dead.
