The lawyer for Ron Cyr suggested in a Hamilton court Monday that his client had nothing to do with killing is wife, and was being blackmailed by another suspect.
Cyr, Zdenek ‘Dennis' Zvolensky and Nashat Qahwash are each accused of first degree murder in the February 2009 shooting death of Cyr's wife, Nadia Gehl.
But defence attorney Devin Bains suggests Zvolensky wanted to buy a canoeing company with Cyr three months before the murder.
He also claims Zvolensky became angry when Cyr told him Gehl said no to the idea.
Bains painted a picture of Zvolensky as a man tired of being held down by conspiracies of the so-called ruling elite who controlled business, the courts and the Internet.
He suggested Zvolensky and Qahwash killed Gehl in the most public way possible, and that Zvolensky told Cyr it was like in the Goodfellas movie.
Bains also alleges Zvolensky didn't get rid of the murder weapon so he could blackmail Cyr into buying into the business.
He claims Zvolensky told Cyr that he should be smart because everyone would think he did it and that he could plant the gun if Cyr didn't play along.
But Zvolensky said none of those allegations made any sense, and denied that he killed Gehl.
This was the third day of cross-examination for Zvolensky.
