The disappearance of a dog in the Dumfries Conservation Area is being blamed on coyotes, and it's the third disappearance in the city in two months.
Cambridge resident Debbie Tohivsky is in mourning after losing her dog Rocky, a 14-pound, three-year-old Bichon-Poo on Wednesday morning.
She was out for her daily walk on a path in the conservation area just off Highway 24 with a friend and their dogs around 8:30 a.m.
When they reached a wooded area they did what they regularly do, and let the dogs run loose, though they were aware coyotes had been seen in the area before.
Suddenly Tohivsky says she heard a loud, piercing screech, some rustling, more screams and then nothing.
She searched the area, but came up with nothing, "I guess he just got a little bit too far. So that's the end of my little boy."
Rocky is the third dog that has disappeared in Cambridge in the last two months, and each is believed to have fallen prey to coyotes.
"I'm just heart broken over it. I can't believe they didn't let us know after the first one, you know, and then I wouldn't have come here and let him off, it's just awful," Tohivsky says.
She has now posted signs at the park warning other dog owners of the dangers. She also asks that anyone who spots the green coat that Rocky was wearing return it to her.
The Cambridge and District Humane Society says coyotes don't like to go near people, and dog owners should keep their pets on a leash to keep them away from danger.
