Eight of 10 people taken to hospital following a crash between a car and a horse and buggy near Clifford have since been released, but two children remain in critical but stable condition.

The crash occurred around 12:15 a.m. Thursday on Highway 9 between Clifford and Harriston in Minto Township.

Police say a Volkswagen GTI was travelling northbound on the road when it collided with a horse and buggy travelling in the same direction.

“It was organized chaos at the start,” said Capt. Dan Ellis of the Minto Fire Department, one of the first people on scene.

“The buggy was in the ditch, the same ditch as the motor vehicle, and it was just completely demolished.”

There were 10 people in the buggy at the time of the crash, reportedly a family returning home from a wedding.

All 10 were taken to hospital for examination and treatment.

All were released later Thursday except for two children, aged four and six, who had been airlifted to hospitals in Hamilton and London.

The driver of the car, a 29-year-old from Stoney Creek, and the horse were not injured in the crash.

The road was closed until 8:15 a.m. for investigation and cleanup efforts.
