CAMBRIDGE -- Waterloo regional police are investigating after a child was struck during a collision near Baintree Way in Cambridge.
Emergency crews were called to the scene around 6 p.m. on Thursday.
Officials say a seven year old was crossing Baintree Way near Coulthard Boulevard when they were struck by a white BMW.
The child was taken to an out-of-region hospital with non-life threatening injuries and has since been listed in stable condition.
Police have not released any information on the identity of the child, the driver, if speed was a factor in the crash, or if any charges will be laid.
"That's my concern, because I have small kids and I always keep an eye on the site whenever cars are going," said Harry Bains, who lives nearby. "Some people are going fast."
On Friday, neighbours and friends were dropping off cards and writing notes for the child.
"My kids play with that kid so it was pretty shocking," said neighbor Arsh Atwal. "They were a little upset and asking a lot of questions. They made some drawings and a card. Hopefully we come out from this."
This is the second time a young child has been hit by a car in this neighbourhood within the past three years.
"We did have another incident a few years ago where another child was hit just down the lane," said neighbor Nupur Rukhaiyar.
The incident occurred in April 2018, when Waterloo regional police say a five-year-old child was struck on nearby Coulthard Boulevard after running out between vehicles.
The child sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
"A lot of kids play on this street, basketball, riding your bikes, and I just worry about them because the traffic goes by so quickly, something needs to be done," said neighbor Darlene Kelly.
Cambridge Ward 8 Coun. Nicholas Ermeta issued a statement Friday, calling Thursday's collision a "tragic event."
He said council knows speeding is a problem in many neighbourhoods and is urging residents to reach out to him with concerns.
Ermeta is suggesting things like speed bumps, curb extensions and bollards can be reviewed.
