Campus Court fire report sparks criminal investigation
CTV News has learned a report on the Campus Court Plaza fire by the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office has been handed over to Waterloo Regional Police, who are now conducting a criminal investigation.
Nine months ago an early morning fire flattened the 17,000 sq. ft. Campus Court commercial complex on University Avenue in Waterloo.
The time needed to conduct forensic tests on samples taken from the scene is believed to be one reason the report has taken so long to complete.
The fire began near one end of the sprawling complex, which at the time, housed popular restaurants, a night club, a candy store and an optical centre.
Damage has been estimated at about $3 million, and about 100 people who worked in the complex lost their jobs.
There is still no word on the cause of the fire, and police are not releasing any information on what was contained in the report or on the investigation.
Plans to rebuild the complex are underway, but it is expected take at least three months to reconstruct the plaza once plans are approved by the city.
