He emptied his piggy bank, and then he got a bit of help.

In four weeks, Yahya Shrem, a nine-year-old boy who lives in Cambridge, has raised the $30,000 goal he set for himself.

Shrem wanted to raise that amount of money so his family could privately sponsor a family of Syrian refugees.

His mom and sister helped him start a group called 25,000 Helping Hands to make the fundraising process possible.

Some of his biggest boosters were employees at VIG Computers, who donated $10,000 to Yahya’s effort.
