Breaking ground on a new school in Kitchener
The Waterloo Catholic District School Board has broken ground on a new school in Kitchener.
Rosenberg Catholic Elementary School will be built at 200 Rosenberg Way.
“We know that this particular area of Kitchener is growing rapidly and so being able to serve the Williamsburg and Rosenberg areas is an exciting opportunity,” WCDSB Director of Education Tyrone Dowling said during the groundbreaking ceremony. “This particular project is a joint project with the Waterloo Catholic District School Board and with the City of Kitchener so it will also have a community centre attached and, as I understand it from city staff, the community centre is currently operating out of multiple locations. This will bring it into one location with a double gymnasium that will allow the community to use after school hours.”
“We know that we need spaces for students," he added. "Currently, at many of our sites, our students are in temporary structures, such as portables. To have a brick and mortar building that will be open for next fall is extremely rewarding for us.”
According to the agenda from a January Board of Trustees meeting, the school will have space for 527 students.
The school board said a new school is needed due to “rapid housing development in the south-west area of Kitchener.”
WCDSB bought the land for the new building back in May 2022.
The agenda went on to say that the school will likely open in September 2025.
