More than one week after falling 40 feet from a staircase, a Brantford man remains in critical condition in a Detroit hospital.

Friends say David Bull had travelled to Michigan to attend a Beck concert at the Fox Theatre on June 28.

Around midnight, his common-law wife Tracy received a call – while descending a staircase after the show, Bull had fallen over a guardrail to the ground below.

“How he fell over the rail, I don’t know,” co-worker Ryan Hantz said Monday.

“I don’t know if anybody really knows.”

Bull received serious injuries in the fall, including a cracked skull and broken vertebrae.

He’s already undergone one operation to remove a piece of his skull.

Friends say his condition has stabilized over the past few days, and while Bull isn’t able to speak, he is able to make a thumbs-up signal and show other signs of awareness.

“He’s not improving greatly, but he’s not getting worse,” said Hantz, who works alongside Bull at as a line technician at Brantford Power.

“The doctors seem OK with that. They say he’s progressing normally.”

Since the incident, Bull’s wife, mother and young son have been staying at a hotel in Detroit.

Longtime friend Derek Heaslip says he felt “shock and disbelief” when he first heard the news.

He didn’t feel much better when he travelled to Detroit to visit Bull in hospital.

“It’s hard to look at one of your closest friends and see him in that kind of condition,” he said.

Travel insurance is covering Bull’s hospital stay, but with his wife out-of-pocket for the travel to and accommodations in Michigan, Bull’s friends have launched an online fundraiser to help her out.

They aim to raise $10,000, and were almost halfway to that goal as of Monday.

“Being where they are, there’s lots of costs involved,” said Heaslip.

“Any little bit is going to help them tremendously.”
