A contentious proposal to expand Brantford’s boundaries isn’t going ahead just yet.

Brant County councillors voted Thursday night to hold off on approving a letter of intent already endorsed by the city, instead asking for some terms to be renegotiated and Six Nations to be brought into the discussion.

“We have not rejected anything, but we have requested to review and renegotiate,” Brant County Mayor Ron Eddy tells CTV News.

The proposal on the table calls for Brantford to annex a large portion of county land to the north of the city, with the county receiving money in exchange.

While many in Brantford are in favour of the proposal because it will allow the city to grow, others in both the city and the county question whether the county is receiving fair compensation, and what development of the land will do to the local environment.

The two sides began discussing the issue in May.
