Dellen Millard was planning a series of robberies before he was arrested for the murder of Tim Bosma, claims his friend Matt Hagerman.

Hagerman told the jury at the Bosma murder trial that in October 2012, Millard contacted him about a “mission” to steal lawnmowers in Waterloo. The two never went ahead with the plan.

But later that month, Hagerman says he did steal something in Woodbridge.

“I saw it back at the airport,” he said on the stand. “The Waterloo airport. It was a bobcat.”

He also claims Mark Smich, Millard’s co-accused, was also there that night.

Hagerman told the court that he was also asked to stash something for Millard.

He says on the night of May 9, 2013 he received a number of calls from Christina Noudga, Millard’s girlfriend at the time.

“They were coming so frequently I thought maybe something was wrong,” said Hagerman.

He texted back, believing he was talking to Millard when he agreed to hide a toolbox.

Hagerman says Millard showed up at his house on May 10th at 4 a.m.

“I asked him if everything was okay,” Hagerman testified. “He said it was better if he didn’t tell me. I asked him how long I’d be holding on to it and he said a couple of days.”

Hagerman wasn’t the only witness that was questioned Wednesday about the toolbox. Mark Smich’s friend Brendan Daly was also asked about the toolbox.

Daly said he spoke with Millard after his arrest.

He told the court that Smich was anxious and jumpy. He also asked for Daly’s help selling a gun that was storing inside a toolbox.

Lawyers asked Daly if he was concerned that the gun had been used in a crime. Daly answered: “something was up.”

Thomas Dungey, Smich’s defence lawyer, repeatedly asked Daly if he was an alcoholic and regular drug user. Daly answered yes.

Dungey then read the police statement Daly made on the May 31st.

“You’ve got to forgive me. Everything is really hazy. When I’m with Mark we’re drinking beer no matter what time of day it is. So the whole train of events is just kind of jammed together.”
