Oxford County OPP say human remains have been found inside a century home destroyed by a fire in Blandford-Blenheim Township.

Police had been searching for the owners of the home, a couple in their 60s, who have been missing since the fire. No details are available at this time on the identity of the remains or the cause of death.

Neighbours say the home was owned by Dr. Ron Gingrich and his wife Lois and that they've lived there for decades. Gingrich works at a practice in Cambridge.

Earlier in the day police had been waiting for the scene to be secured before searching the charred wreckage.

Oxford County OPP Const. Stacey Culbert told CTV News then, "Right now it's just a matter of making sure the structure is safe before there can be any type of a search that can begin."

OPP Forensic Identification vehicles were at the scene around 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday as the remains of the home continued to smoulder.

The fire on Monday morning gutted the yellow brick house on Township Road 12 near Blenheim Road in Oxford County and firefighters remained on scene all night and into Tuesday morning dousing the hotspots.

Fire crews were initally called to the scene around 10:30 a.m., but were unable to save the building which was already fully engulfed in flames. The roof had collapsed by early afternoon and smoke continued to pour from the home for hours.

At various times up to 50 firefighters from several different stations were needed to help douse the blaze. On Tuesday morning a bulldozer was brought in to take out some of the walls.

The Ontario Fire Marshal's Office is leading the investigation into what may have caused the blaze, assisted by Oxford County OPP.
