A small Perth County town is trying to come to terms with the loss of 20-year-old Candice Grube, who was struck and killed by a car while out walking on Sunday afternoon.

Her 15-year-old sister, Beverly Grube, was also struck while walking along the shoulder of Road 158, but suffered non life-threatening injuries.

Perth County OPP Const. Kees Wijnands says "They're walking with the traffic, so they may not have even seen what hit them, and it would have been a sudden, sudden jolt…Now they've lost another young resident, 20 years of age, that's tragic"

This is the second misfortune for the town in recent months. Ken Rea, a volunteer firefighter from Atwood, was killed fighting a blaze at a store in nearby Listowel in March.

Atwood resident Roxanne Bowman says "The girls are beautiful girls, I see them walking around all the time…It's devastating. It needs to stop. This needs to stop we've had our share."

Many questions remain surrounding the collision, but for the moment the 21-year-old driver isn't facing charges. The driver and a passenger were not hurt in the incident.

"They were very cooperative with the investigators immediately after the incident and stuck around and they were very, very much in shock," Kees says.

OPP continue to investigate, and are asking anyone with information to contact police.

Meanwhile the community will once again attempt to recover from a shock nobody expected.
