A 33-year-old Quebec man is facing charges in connection with an incident that left a woman in hospital in critical condition and closed down Highway 401 between Cambridge and Guelph for several hours.

The series of events leading to the charges is believed to have begun before 5 a.m. Wednesday on the westbound 401, near the Cambridge service centre.

OPP believe one woman either jumped or was pushed out of a vehicle in that area, suffering serious injuries.

She remains in serious condition in a Hamilton hospital.

The vehicle then began to travel eastward in the highway’s westbound lanes.

OPP stopped the vehicle near the exit for Highway 6 North, but the driver attempted to take off as an officer approached his car.

As it fled, it hit a marked OPP cruiser and came to rest, at which point the driver was arrested.

Derek Carroll was officially charged Thursday with attempted murder and attempt to disarm a police officer.

He remains in custody and OPP continue to investigate.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 905-841-5777.
