An attempted murder charge has been laid in connection with an apparent stabbing in Waterloo earlier this week.

Monday afternoon, Waterloo Regional Police were called to a wooded area off of Quiet Place, near Albert Street and Bearinger Road.

Neighbours say a man and woman were involved in the incident, and the man was left lying in the forest with what appeared to be a stab wound in his neck as the woman asked for someone to call 911.

Wednesday morning, police confirmed that a 20-year-old Toronto man is charged with attempted murder in relation to the attack.

“A 20-year-old woman was attacked by a 20-year-old man,” says Insp. Kevin Thaler.

“It’s been determined that the man’s injuries are self-inflicted.”

The man, Yiyin Xie, remains in an intensive care unit, recovering from life-threatening injuries.

The woman, a Waterloo resident, has since been released from hospital.

Police say the pair were in an estranged dating relationship.

Homicide and domestic violence investigators continue to look into the incident.

Officers canvassed the neighbourhood Wednesday, asking if anyone had seen a blue 2013 Dodge Dart early in the day Monday.

“We had some suspicious activity reported on Monday morning,” says Thaler.

Any witnesses are asked to contact police at 519-579-9668 ext. 2526 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
