Thieves who pried ATMs away from businesses in Guelph and New Hamburg may have attempted to strike again – only to find themselves striking out.

Brant County OPP say multiple people attempted to remove an ATM from a Royal Bank branch in Scotland, south of Brantford, around 4:30 a.m. Thursday.

The suspects attached a chain to the ATM and attempted to pull the machine off the wall with the help of a pickup truck.

It’s the same method used earlier this week at a grocery store in New Hamburg and a car wash in Guelph.

In both those cases, the trucks were left not far from the scene and determined to have been stolen.

The attempt to do the same in Scotland wasn’t quite so successful, OPP say, as the thieves eventually left without the ATM.

Police later found the pickup truck abandoned on Six Nations, but say there may have been other vehicles involved as well.

It’s not clear if the same people are responsible for the Scotland theft as the initial two.
