Waterloo Region police are investigating after an armed robbery at a bank in Waterloo on Thursday morning.

Officers were called shortly after 7 a.m. to the TD Canada Trust on the corner of Fischer-Hallman Road and Erb Street.

Initial reports indicate that as two employees arrived for work about an hour before the bank was set to open they were confronted by two men who were wearing masks and holding firearms.

Waterloo Regional Police spokesperson Alana Holtom says “As the employees were accessing the building the suspects entered with the employees.”

Fortunately no one was physically injured in the incident.

Police say after the suspects forced their way into the bank, they demanded money and fled with an undetermined, but possibly substantial, amount of cash.

When officers arrived, it was unclear if the robbers were still inside, but the scene was soon cleared.

A canine unit was dispatched to the scene to aid in the search for suspects, but they were not located.

The forensics team was at the scene by 9 a.m. collecting evidence and police have since released images from surveillance video in an attempt to identify the suspects.

They are considered armed and dangerous and the method could indicate the suspects have some experience.

Investigators will be looking into whether this robbery is connected with other similar incidents.

“There are similarities between this case and others within Ontario. It is still early to determine whether or not they are connected, but it’s certainly something we’re taking a look at.”
