Nearly three weeks after Melinda Vasilije was found dead in her apartment, the ex-boyfriend accused of killing her remains at large.

Ager Hasan has not been seen since April 29 – the day Vasilije was killed.

Police have said that he crossed into the United States shortly after Vasilije was killed, and was spotted later that day stealing Pennsylvania licence plates from a vehicle in a parking lot in Erie County, Penn.

While no sightings have been confirmed since then, Waterloo Regional Police Insp. Mike Haffner said Thursday that lines of communication had been open as recently as Wednesday.

“Our investigators have been in contact with Mr. Hasan,” he said.

Asked for details about the nature of the communication, Haffner said that it happened via “various avenues and platforms.”

Vasilije, 22, was living in an apartment on Country Hill Drive in Kitchener at the time of her death. She had only moved there a few weeks earlier. Police have said Hasan was under a court order to stay out of Waterloo Region and not have any contact with Vasilije.

As the search for Hasan continues, police say they will be using social media to alert people in the United States to the 24 year old’s possible presence.

“We’re reaching out to our U.S. partners and our U.S. community to encourage them to have Mr. Hasan turn himself in to the authorities,” Haffner said.

Hasan is wanted on charges of second-degree murder and breaching court orders.
