When Kitchener was awarded this week's OFSAA Girls 'AAAA' volleyball tournament, organizers could never have imagined it would end as well as it did.

Wednesday evening's Gold Medal match featured two hometown Kitchener high schools, as Forest Heights hosted fifth-seeded Grand River for the all-Ontario championship. Both teams were a perfect 5-0 going in.

Playing in front of a loud, standing room-only crowd at the Forest Heights gym, the second-seeded Lady Trojans outlasted the Renegades in four games (25-20, 22-25, 25-22, 25-18) to claim their fourth OFSAA 'AAAA' crown in ten years.

It marked the end of the head coaching career of Forest Heights coach Paul Pavan, who will retire from teaching this year. Under Pavan, the Trojans captured six all-Ontario volleyball titles since 1990, the first two (in 1990 and 2002) coming at the 'AAA' level.
