A construction worker has been airlifted to a Hamilton hospital with serious injuries following an incident at a Waterloo construction site.

A descending counterweight on a man-lift fell on the worker around 10:30 a.m. Friday as he was working on the site – the Barrelyards development at 80 Father David Bauer Drive.

The victim is believed to be a London man in his early 20s.

An Ornge air ambulance landed at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex shortly before 11:15 a.m. and transported him to Hamilton General Hospital with wrist and ankle injuries.

“They would be considered severe injuries,” Waterloo Regional Police spokesperson Olaf Heinzel says.

Stone Rise Construction Group is the main contractor on the project, but company officials say Friday’s victim worked for a subcontractor.

In a statement, Stone Rose chief operating officer Adam Hopper called the event “unfortunate” and said the company is doing what it can to support the victim’s family and colleagues.

“We are thankful that the gentleman injured today is stable,” he says.

“Going forward, our focus is ensuring the continued safety of the worksite.”

Work on the Barrelyards stopped for the day after the incident, with crews sent home.

The Ministry of Labour is investigating.
