Hugh McColl, the 61-year-old man accused of second-degree murder in the death of Kitchener resident Kate Lynn Reid, made a brief court appearance Monday afternoon.

Appearing via a video link from prison, McColl said he had applied for legal aid assistance.

He was arrested Saturday morning, more than two months after Reid was last seen and six days after police began treating her case as one of foul play.

Police say the two were roommates in an apartment on Burn Place, and friends say they met online when Reid was searching for somebody with whom she could split rent with.

Friend Roger Napper says he met McColl on one occasion, when he was visiting Reid.

“He was sitting there. I said ‘Hello,’ he went ‘Hi,’ and that was about all he spoke,” Napper told CTV News.

“He just sat there (and) didn’t say much of anything.”

Police have yet to find Reid’s body.

McColl is expected to appear in court in person Tuesday morning.
