A Kitchener mom has been charged in the death of her 20-month-old daughter.
27-year-old Nicole Eidt appeared in court Friday morning, charged with criminal negligence causing death.
Two family members were also in the courtroom.
According to court documents, Eidt is accused of leaving fentanyl accessible to the child, causing the death of Amelia Runstedler.
Waterloo Regional Police were called to Heritage Drive in Kitchener around noon on Thursday following reports of a child in distress.
When they arrived, they found Amelia without vital signs.
“They came out with the baby in their hands,” said Khushboo Mistry, who lives next door. “We thought that baby was unconscious or sleeping.”
Officers performed CPR until paramedics arrived. The toddler was pronounced dead in hospital.
Mistry says Eidt was banging her head on her truck and crying as police left.
Police say officers located suspected fentanyl in the residence.
Forensic detectives were on scene at the home today. Police say the investigation is ongoing.
“This is a very tragic incident,” said Cst. Ashley Dietrich of Waterloo Regional Police. “Our heartfelt condolences do go out to the family and the community who are grieving this loss.”
Police are still waiting for autopsy results to determine the exact cause of death.
Eidt’s next court appearance is scheduled for Monday.
