96-year-old man taken to hospital after being hit by car at Kitchener crosswalk
A 96-year-old man was taken to hospital with head injuries after being struck by a car at a crosswalk on Saturday evening.
Police said the man was crossing River Road East in Kitchener, between Ottawa Street and Hickson Drive, around 5:30 p.m.
Police said one side of traffic began to slow down for him as he started to cross, and then a red car hit him.
Residents in the area said they are concerned with the crosswalk.
"Cars often come screeching to a halt for children crossing. They do have guards, but weekends, a lot of kids cross, there's a school right there," said Lon Crockatt who lives nearby.
Some people said they would like to see flashing lights, while other said the speed limit should be lowered.
"It works well when there's a crossing guard during school hours but otherwise people don't seem to stop," said Anita Reid who also lives close..
All seem to agree that the crosswalk sign may not be enough.
Police said the driver of the red car was released from the scene.
The investigation is continuing as police try to figure out exactly what happened.
