KITCHENER -- A Ford dealership in Fergus has been the target of a high-end auto theft.

Nine trucks, totaling nearly $700,000, were stolen right off the lot near Highway 6.

Police say all of them were different models, including F-150s, F-250s and F-350s.

“This is big,” says public safety analyst Chris Lewis. “It would require a lot of coordination and a lot of bodies to pull that off.”

The owner of the lot sent CTV News a statement which reads, in part: “On the morning of Sunday, April 26, we were contacted by a concerned citizen regarding what looked like vehicle parts strewn around our dealership lot. We immediately notified the Wellington County OPP. While working with the officers it was discovered that we were missing nine new vehicles.”

Investigators suggest the individuals had extensive knowledge of anti-theft devices and how to steal numerous vehicles at one time.

“It’s very organized,” says Lewis. “They would have to have a way to get those vehicles new vehicle identification numbers to be able to sell them properly.”

Police say eight other vehicles in the lot were also damaged when the thieves tried to remove the door handles and some licence plates were also removed.

The trucks were last seen on surveillance video driving south on Highway 6.

Within the past year, police have busted a number of car theft rings in Ontario. One operation out of Hamilton, named “Project Seagull,” led to a number of arrests.

It’s not clear if the incident in Fergus is linked to any other auto theft ring.
