Two people are facing charges after the alleged discovery of 200,000 contraband cigarettes.

Haldimand County OPP say the cigarettes were found in a vehicle which was stopped on Highway 6 in Caledonia.

As a result, two Mississauga men are facing charges under the Tobacco Tax Act and Criminal Code.

Specific charges laid include the criminal offence of trafficking contraband tobacco, as well as Tobacco Tax Act offences relating to possession of unmarked cigarettes.

A group called the National Coalition Against Contraband Tobacco has claimed that one-third of all cigarettes purchased in Ontario are illegal, and pushed for municipal police services to be given the power to investigate the issue.
