Before he was sentenced to 10 years in prison, Wesley Laforme got up out of his wheelchair to apologize to his victims.

“I am so, so sorry,” he said.

“I ask for forgiveness. I don’t want anyone to do the stuff I did that night. I’m just so ashamed.”

Laforme, 30, admits to stabbing his ex-girlfriend and a Waterloo Regional Police officer during a dispute at a property on Morning Calm Drive in Cambridge.

Court documents show that he was at his ex-girlfriend’s home for the second time in a matter of hours.

Not wanting to speak with Laforme due to threats he made during his first visit, she hid in the basement and called 911.

After charging through the front door, Laforme was calmed down by the woman – until police arrived, at which point he stabbed her nine times, then stabbed the police officer in her leg.

Moments after that, the police officer shot Laforme – who would later tell police that he planned to kill his ex-girlfriend and himself – in the back.

Video from surveillance cameras in the area shows that the entire encounter lasted approximately 25 seconds.

He pleaded guilty to attempted murder and aggravated assault in August, four months after the attack.

All three people were injured in the altercation.

The police officer, Const. Elizabeth Skelding, was released from care within 24 hours.

Laforme and his ex-girlfriend both required surgery, and were both taken to trauma centres.

Court heard Wednesday that Laforme still has bullet fragments lodged in his spine.

Although he requires a wheelchair for day-to-day life, he is expected to be able to walk again at some point.

Laforme’s 10-year sentence does not include credit for time already served.

Skelding’s conduct during the incident remains under investigation by Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit.
