A police standoff that lasted for several hours and put two elementary schools in hold and secures ended with a 69-year-old man being found dead inside a home.
Waterloo Regional Police say they were called to a home on Tilley Court, near River Road and Lorraine Avenue in Kitchener, around 4 a.m.
“There was some concern for the safety of the lone male inside,” Insp. Mike Haffner told reporters.
According to Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit, the call was “of a domestic nature.”
Officers set up a perimeter around the home. A tactical team was called in.
Haffner said police spent several hours trying to contact the man and convince him to come outside.
“We didn’t use any force whatsoever,” he said.
Around 10 a.m., officers made their way inside the home and found the man dead inside.
The SIU was then contacted, as it is anytime someone dies or is seriously injured while interacting with police.
Two schools in the area – Canadian Martyrs Catholic Elementary School and Mackenzie King Public School – were in hold and secure for much of the morning due to the police presence in the area.
