The investigation into a murder at a Kitchener long-term care home has been handed over by Waterloo Regional Police due to concerns about the potential for their probe to be seen as biased.

The case in question is the March 7 death of Ronald McCabe, a 56-year-old man who was found dead at the AR Goudie long-term care home on Frederick Street.

Waterloo resident Adam McCabe, 32, is charged with second-degree murder in Ronald McCabe’s death.

Police say the two men knew each other, and Ronald McCabe lived at the home while Adam McCabe was visiting.

Monday, police announced that the Ontario Provincial Police had been called in to handle the investigation.

That, Waterloo Regional Police said, was because one or more of the “key parties directly associated with the case” are related to a senior officer within Waterloo Regional Police.

“It’s in the best interests of this case to have an outside agency investigate it,” OPP Sgt. Peter Leon told CTV News.

In a press release, Police Chief Bryan Larkin said the decision to give the case to the OPP was “based on transparency.”

Adam McCabe remains in custody, with his next court appearance expected later this week.
