A Waterloo Regional Police officer appeared in court Tuesday in connection with a sexual assault charge stemming from an alleged incident at the Ontario Police College.

Det. Const. Zachary Gent was charged in June, 14 months after the alleged incident.

According to Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit, both Gent and the person who brought forward the complaint against him were at the college at the time.

Gent’s court appearance in St. Thomas on Tuesday was brief, with his next court date set for Aug. 23.

He has been on paid suspension from his duties with Waterloo Regional Police since the allegation came to light.
