The trip to Vimy Ridge that was on and then was off is now back on.

Approximately 100 students from across the Waterloo Region District School Board had put down $200 deposits and started planning to travel to France and Belgium next spring, in part to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

Earlier this month, those students were told in a letter that the trips were being cancelled due to federal travel advisories relating to the potential for terrorism in those two countries.

On Monday, students got another letter – this one telling the students that the trip would go ahead after all.

“We have elected to allow previously scheduled trips to Belgium and France to proceed,” the letter reads.

Before leaving for Europe, everyone going on the trip will have to complete a travel safety course.

The board is also giving students who have had second thoughts about the trip until Dec. 16 to ccancel and receive a full refund.

School board officials say the new decision is based on information received from students, parents, school board trustees and staff, tour operators, other school boards, the federal government, the Vimy Foundation and insurance companies.
