A jury has found Jeffrey Woodman guilty of dangerous driving causing bodily harm, aggravated assault of a police officer and two other offences in connection with a crash which left a Waterloo Regional Police sergeant with severe injuries.

Sgt. Eugene Fenton received a broken leg and other injuries after being hit by a vehicle on Sheldon Drive in Kitchener in September 2013.

At the time, he had fired his weapon at the vehicle four times in an attempt to stop it.

The incident began with Fenton responding to a shoplifting call at a Weber Street grocery store.

Woodman and two other men had attempted to remove cheese products, chocolate milk and lighters from the store by hiding the items in their pants.

A short police chase was called off for public safety reasons, and several minutes elapsed before Fenton caught up with the car on Sheldon.

Woodman’s sentencing is expected to take place in January.

His lawyer, Hal Mattson, says he expects the Crown to ask for a prison sentence but has yet to decide on his own recommendation.
